It's always been a little joke that I get to be the princess one month a year.<br />
<br />
Then we lost more than a real Princess, we lost a friend, a confidant and a spirit guide. She was our first role model, first crush, first woman that I ever heard speak loud and proud about mental illness. She was a General, a partner, a mother, a writer, actress and a treasure. I loved you Carrie Fisher. I always will. You wore so many hats on that incredible brain...we can never hope to find your equal.<br />
<br />
This is what I wanted to read, and now more than ever, I think we could use these stories.<br />
<br />
So here, in some small way, is our celebration and remembrance of an exceptional lady. The January GGBC book:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The read begins January 1st and we will post about it the last Saturday of the month. All our links are on the sidebar. Please join us and enjoy every word.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We will miss you always Carrie, and we want you to know, we will NEVER want that wagon wheel coffee table. <3</div>

<br />
We are all so busy the next few weeks that it is a time of year that we traditionally here at GGBC take a break from reading and get crafty. This isn't just regular crafts, this can include baking, metal and wood working, making a popcorn popper out of soda cans or getting that scarf knit you always wanted to finish. Paint a picture, write a haiku, make a baking soda and vinegar volcano complete with dinosaurs or get that damn Lego set put together. It's all about giving yourself permission to take time for yourself and do something YOU want to do. Remember you? Yeah, you is pretty damn amazing, and they need some looking after. SO GO FORTH AND CREATE!<br />
<br />
We always have a kind of highlighted craft book to give us inspiration, and this year we've got a great one by our very own fellow geek craft mentor, Bonnie Burton. My friends yearning for awesome crafts I give you:<br />

Why do we let these supposed happiest times of the year become our most dreaded human interactions? Whether you look forward to the holidays with joyous abandon or a bottle of scotch and dread in your heart, we could all use some things and those things would be gratitude and humor. Those two things will get you through a hell of a lot kids, a HELL of a lot.<br />
<br />
If we can see the humor in even the roughest times, if we can remember to be grateful for even the smallest of graces, than you are ahead of the game my dears, you are ahead by MILES. So I thought I'd share with you a new book I read and fell in love with, by a woman I admire and love the work of so deeply, I can only hope you find the joy in her words the way I have. She is a goddamn gift, and she embodies the gratitude and humor thing like nobody's business. You're going to love her. GGBC, I present our November book for 2016:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3IXDCTxWyX0/WAu8tuqNYfI/AAAAAAAACck/5HFmSL5MP88XSsmKCuOxvBK6EbGsVZOigCK4B/s1600/960.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3IXDCTxWyX0/WAu8tuqNYfI/AAAAAAAACck/5HFmSL5MP88XSsmKCuOxvBK6EbGsVZOigCK4B/s400/960.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
From Amazon:</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 14px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">In the span of four months in 2012, Tig Notaro was hospitalized for a debilitating intestinal disease called C. diff, her mother unexpectedly died, she went through a breakup, and then she was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer. Hit with this devastating barrage, Tig took her grief onstage. Days after receiving her cancer diagnosis, she broke new comedic ground, opening an unvarnished set with the words: “Good evening. Hello. I have cancer. How are you? Hi, how are you? Is everybody having a good time? I have cancer.” The set went viral instantly and was ultimately released as Tig’s sophomore album, <em>Live</em>, which sold one hundred thousand units in just six weeks and was later nominated for a Grammy.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-size: 14px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Now, the wildly popular star takes stock of that no good, very bad year—a difficult yet astonishing period in which tragedy turned into absurdity and despair transformed into joy. An inspired combination of the deadpan silliness of her comedy and the open-hearted vulnerability that has emerged in the wake of that dire time, <em>I’m Just a Person</em> is a moving and often hilarious look at this very brave, very funny woman’s journey into the darkness and her thrilling return from it.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-size: 14px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-size: 14px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">This is the book that will make you laugh out loud, will make you feel a whole lot of the feels, and appreciate the pain and love it took to write this book. I promise, you will leave Tig's writing feeling lighter, stronger and being grateful to have spent time in the pages of this woman's mind.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">I hope that Thanksgiving is good to you my sweet Geeks, I am sure as hell grateful for each and every one of you. And I hope you'll be joining me for this read starting November 1st. We'll discuss starting the last Saturday of the month, and I hope I see you here, or on Goodreads, Twitter or Facebook. All the links are on the side of this blog. So I'll meet you in November, I'll be the one with the scotch, and a grateful heart. </span></div>

The favorite time of year for all thriller/horror fans. We can't wait to get our fill of movie marathons, and we are always on the lookout for the creepy movie or story we haven't heard, or to go back and read our favorite terror tale.<br />
<br />
At GGBC, we always try and pick something that is creepy and a really exciting read, and this year this one was requested many times, so we are finally reading it.<br />
<br />
Welcome to October, and our book for Halloween, The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.<br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px;">First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson's </span><i style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px;">The Haunting of Hill House</i><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px;"> has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.</span></div>

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 22.4px;">This is a great classic, and it will be easy to get a hold of just about anywhere. I think you will be glad you did. It's a don't miss for a scary story fan, and incredible to revisit if you have read it in the past.</span></span></div>

<br />
I hope you had an amazing summer and you ate amazing foods and went amazing places and saw amazing sights. And I hope if all of those things were in your own backyard you had a summer like me and THAT IS AWESOME.<br />
<br />
Now that our vacation/staycations are over, it is time to get down to the business we all want to get to. Reading some damn books.<br />
<br />
I wanted something light, something fun, and something that will make you remember women can be the biggest badasses on the planet, and even badasses in the kitchen. We are powerful when we find our gifts baby, we are unstoppable then.<br />
<br />
September 1st begins our read of our dream best friend and culinary angel, Julia Child. You can't learn about her and her life and not fall smitten and in awe of her tenacity. She was one powerful geek girl, and we are celebrating her as our first book back.<br />
<br />

<span class="s1">You hear a lot about "living your best life ". You see it on Instagram , on Pinterest and most annoyingly, as a hashtag. Most of the time you see this accompanied by photos of dream locations, perfectly decorated rooms and gorgeous meals in fancy restaurants. The perfect pair of jeans or 700 dollar boots.</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">This got me thinking. What about the rest of us? Are we not living our best lives because we aren't seeing the Grecian sunset or the perfectly plated meal? What if we are eating our frozen dinner in front of YouTube videos in our sweatpants?</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">Living your best life is not a Pinterest board. Maybe living YOUR best life is feeling good enough to take a shower today as the weight of depression lessens. Your best life is playing with your pets or your kids because today was a really good day in your chronic illness. You got to the store even though you were really anxious about it. You started those new meds. You did a chemo treatment, again. You dealt with that asshole at work without letting them rattle you. You went to the gym. Made a commitment. Walked away from a bad situation. Made the phone call. Started writing. Had time to read. Volunteered at the shelter. Said yes. Said no.</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<br />
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">Living your best life is more than a hashtag, more than a material thing. It is you. It is doing something with courage or conviction or joy. It is doing the very best you can the best way you know how. It is surviving another day. It is helping others. In every way big and small that you open your life up with brave steps or a loving act, you are living your best life. So don't compare someone's trip to the coast with your anxious trip to the store or trip to the shower. They all are beautiful. They all have the power to change your life, to make you stronger. Never forget you are constantly braving new adventures, whatever they may be, and I am so proud of you for forging ahead. Never stop going. Your best life is right now, hashtag or no. </span></div>

<br />
Geek Girls Book Club is off to kindergarten and I can hardly believe it. Our baby is growing up.<br />
<br />
I cannot tell you how teary eyed, weepy proud it makes me that we are all still here, with new friends and old, celebrating dozens and dozens of books and shenanigans...still crazy after all these years, as Paul Simon would say:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/46bkXgxb66E/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/46bkXgxb66E?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
It has been a wonderful, winding journey and it has changed my life and many of yours in little and miraculous ways. And I would love it if you wanted to share your GGBC story with us, here in the comments or on the Facebook or Goodreads group, or tweet me at @nikkisticks on Twitter. Like a little online scrapbook for us all to remember fondly as the baby photos fade. I love you guys, thank you for being you.<br />
<br />
It also is ushering in our Summer Break! No scheduled books June, July or August, but there are so many amazing books coming out this summer, and so many great ones to catch up on from the GGBC book list, you won't be wordless for a minute!<br />
<br />
But we do have a book for May that has me jumping up and damn down with excitement. You know my big three: Neil Gaiman, Richard Kadrey and Joe Hill. They are my trifecta of wonderful. And guess what? All 3 have new stuff coming out very soon. It was horrific to have to pick one for May, but please do check out the new books from Neil and Richard, they will sweep you off your feet with wonder. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Everything-Box-Novel-Richard-Kadrey/dp/0062389548/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1461018839&sr=8-1&keywords=everything+box+kadrey">Richard Kadrey's The Everything Box</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/View-Cheap-Seats-Selected-Nonfiction/dp/0062262262/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1461018929&sr=1-1&keywords=neil+gaiman+cheap+seats">Neil Gaiman's The View From The Cheap Seats</a><br />
<br />
So for our 5th anniversary, we are reading Joe Hill's "The Fireman". In stores May 17th.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This one will keep me up at night in the best possible way, and I am really hoping that you will all join me for another adventure with Mr. Hill, and share your thoughts about it the last Saturday of May. It is going to be one not to miss, so get on those library waiting lists early, don't say I didn't warn you. Joe is also going on a book tour, so be sure to check out if he'll be in your area, and give him a big GGBC thank you for being such a great supporter of ours. He's good people.<br />
<br />
Richard Kadrey is also out on tour for his new book, so give him a big thanks too because he has been awesome to GGBC too. As has Mr. Gaiman. We are lucky, lucky book nerds guys.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So happy anniversary my loves, and enjoy this new book, I can't wait to discuss it with you, I'll be the one under my all powerful protective blanket, holding my flashlight in a vice grip. I hope your summer is BLISS, and check back with us to see what we're all reading all summer and share what you're up to in the world of books. We'll have SO MUCH to talk about when school's back in.</div>

It's quirky, touching, and surprisingly thought provoking. And what it has to say is just what we need to hear in the world right now. Love is everything. Find happiness. Let your freak flag fly my darlings.<br />
<br />
So for the GGBC April 2016 book I give you:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">Nineteen-year-old Harold Chasen is obsessed with death. He fakes suicides to shock his self-obsessed mother, drives a hearse, and attends funerals of complete strangers. Seventy-nine-year-old Maude Chardin, on the other hand, adores life. She liberates trees from city sidewalks and transplants them to the forest, paints smiles on the faces of church statues, and “borrows” cars to remind their owners that life is fleeting— here today, gone tomorrow! A chance meeting between the two turns into a madcap, whirlwind romance, and Harold learns that life is worth living, and how to play the banjo.</span></div>
<div id="descriptionContainer" style="background-color: white; border-bottom-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; color: #181818; line-height: 18px;">

<div class="readable stacked" id="description" style="line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 10px; right: 0px; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">You will find you see a little of yourself in these characters, and maybe wishing you were a little more like them. This is a title that is easy to get a hold of at your local library or bookstore, and even for your e-reader. This story is going to be some spring cleaning for our winter weary minds, and I hope you love it.</span></div>
<div class="readable stacked" id="description" style="line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 10px; right: 0px; text-align: left;">
We will chat about this book starting the last Saturday of April, and we are on Goodreads, Facebook and Twitter at #GGBC or @nikkisticks if you want to tweet me directly. All the links are in the sidebar of the blog. I really can't wait for us to read this one, so I'll see you the end of the month. I'll be the one with the banjo, liberating trees. </div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
These women...<br />
<br />
I have a friend, who lost her husband after helping him through the ravages of a stroke. She remained loving and positive, even through her pain. Spreading her heart to others. She is Love personified.<br />
<br />
I have a friend, who is an artist. She has fought past physical hardship and uncertainty to find her truth, to stand fully in who she is, to create with vision. She is Joyfulness herself.<br />
<br />
I have a friend who is an actress. She took a leap of faith to entertain, to bring joy, to be what she is meant to be. She brings fearlessness with her in whatever she does. She is Confidence.<br />
<br />
I have friends who are sisters. They not only care for all their family and friends without hesitation, but they live their dream of running a farm. All with working full time jobs and helping their dad through illness. Even in his loss, they are beacons of positive energy and who I want to be. They are Hope.<br />
<br />
I have a friend who is a single mother. She raises 2 amazing girls and never wastes time on the negative. She fought through much so she could come out the other side making the world better for her girls and her community. She is Strength.<br />
<br />
I have, unfortunately, friends who have fought, and are fighting cancer. Their grace and beauty remained untouched by disease. They used their journey to expand their hearts, and the hearts of those around them. They are Warriors.<br />
<br />
I have a sister, who never lets her dreams slip away. She is constantly creating in words, in art, in her own way, a life that is unique and her own. She never lets fear stop her, she keeps her life turned toward the light. She is Inspiration.<br />
<br />
I have a daughter, who at a young age has achieved more than many ever will. It's not just her amazing grades and achievements as a child, but as an adult, she has made a life to be proud of. She has a job she loves and friends who support her. She never, ever gives up. She makes things happen. She is Determination.<br />
<br />
I have a mother, diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in her early 30's. It has physically crippled nearly every joint, causing daily, unforgiving pain. After more than 20 surgeries, she still walks on her own two feet. Has volunteered to make her community better, has raised 2 children and been married joyfully for almost 46 years. My first teacher of grace, of always helping others, and never letting the negative take the brilliant shine off the positive. She is Grace incarnate.<br />
<br />
I am blessed, for all these women, and many more I could name. Thank you for giving me your lessons. Thank you for giving me your love. Thank you for making my heart better for knowing you.<br />

The month of Valentine, the month of love. But as great as romantic love is, there is nothing as wonderful as the love we have of our friends. Our chosen family, the people who choose us again and again, knowing our best and worst traits.<br />
<br />
It seems a sign that the perfect book to celebrate friendship and the love we have for them will be released February 16, 2016. I give you Our new GGBC read:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Leonard-Fifty-Year-Friendship-Remarkable-Man/dp/1250083311/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453271221&sr=8-1&keywords=leonard">Leonard by: William Shatner on Amazon</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
From Amazon.com:</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px; margin-bottom: 14px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">
Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner first crossed paths as actors on the set of <i>The Man</i> <i>from U.N.C.L.E.</i>Little did they know that their next roles, in a new science fiction television series, would shape their lives in ways no one could have anticipated. In seventy-nine television episodes and six feature films, they grew to know each other more than most friends could ever imagine.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px; margin-bottom: 14px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">
Over the course of half a century, Shatner and Nimoy saw each other through personal and professional highs and lows. In this powerfully emotional book, Shatner tells the story of a man who was his friend for five decades, recounting anecdotes and untold stories of their lives on and off set, as well as gathering stories from others who knew Nimoy well, to present a full picture of a rich life.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">
As much a biography of Nimoy as a story of their friendship, <i>Leonard</i> is a uniquely heartfelt book written by one legendary actor in celebration of another.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 22.4px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">The Geek Girls Book Club is built on friendships, on connections that go beyond our families and partners, these people are a huge part of who shape us and make us who we are. Who we choose to be. I hope that you will read this and share it with your friends, and we will all remember how blessed we are to have people who love us, even when we make loving us hard.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 22.4px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">The book, written by my forever crush William Shatner (@WilliamShatner) will be released on February 16, so get on your library waiting lists and pre-order your copies now. Because it is released later in the month, we are going to have this one be our February/March read to give everyone time to finish it.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 22.4px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 22.4px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">So grab your geeky friends, read this book and keep it, and them, close. You are going to really enjoy this tale of friendship and adventure. We will discuss this one the last Saturday of March, so I will see you here, at our Goodreads group, on Twitter and Facebook (Links for all are in the sidebar). I'll be the one holding my Spock doll wearing my Captain Kirk robe with a tear in my eye. </span></div>

It is time to forge ahead. Time to pick a new path of adventure to start the new year off right.<br />
<br />
So I thought to start the year on a high note we will have a story I love that is short and amazing, and a story we visited before, and is sadly coming to an end.<br />
<br />
This month, GGBC has for you:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7-EM2MrwQKU/VnDPtP02zvI/AAAAAAAACZE/6LHy6dvofBk/s1600/maxresdefault.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7-EM2MrwQKU/VnDPtP02zvI/AAAAAAAACZE/6LHy6dvofBk/s400/maxresdefault.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-y-j55hocPP0/VnDPzjwljNI/AAAAAAAACZQ/ipy936KX9h4/s1600/26011363.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-y-j55hocPP0/VnDPzjwljNI/AAAAAAAACZQ/ipy936KX9h4/s400/26011363.jpg" width="250" /></a></div>
<br />
Odd and the Frost Giants is a classic, lovely tale by the wonderful Neil Gaiman, <a href="http://www.neilgaiman.com/works/Books/Odd+and+the+Frost+Giants/">Link to Odd and the Frost Giants</a>, available just about anywhere. You will love the imagery and the adventure of this story, and is a great one to share with younger Geek readers in your life. One of my favorites.<br />
<br />
The second book is the final book in the Wasted series by our own Cara Vescio, Totally Wasted. <a href="http://www.thewastedseries.com/">Link to Wasted series website</a><br />
If you haven't read the first two of the series with us, you will not be disappointed. This is a great series filled with amazing women, bad ass action and pop culture references. It is amazing. I think you will really enjoy it. This can be ordered easily, right from Amazon. On Kindle too!<br />
<br />
This will be a great way to start your year off, and get ready for more incredible titles as the year goes on, including some guest picks for certain months!<br />
<br />
We'll discuss these beauties the last Saturday of January, and that is done with #GGBC on Twitter, on our Goodreads or Facebook groups, or right here in comments. (Links are right here on the blog.)<br />
<br />
Hope that your new year is filled with more joy than pain and more light than dark, and I can't wait to see you to discuss the books! I'll be the one in the corner, looking dangerous, drinking red wine and reading.Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17936036370496372522noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3363355170303670971.post-3627508424323567432015-11-16T12:11:00.000-08:002015-11-16T12:11:38.976-08:004th Annual GGBC Craft-A Palooza!Every December, we have a tradition here at The Geek Girls Book Club, and that is that December is about YOU.<br />
<br />
Whether you celebrate the holidays or not, this time of year is jammed with stressors. Lines, weather, impatient people wherever you go...it can put a huge cloud over the whole time of year.<br />
<br />
So instead of having another thing to do, even as fun as reading a book, I want you to do something YOU WANT TO DO. Only catch? I want you to share what you did with us on one of our social media groups, or even here in the comments.<br />
<br />
You want to learn to play the ukulele? Tell us what you did to make it happen. Learn poker? Dog training? The history of swords? Knitting? Painting? Photography? WHATEVER. Go and learn something awesome, make something crafty, and share what it is and what resources you used to do it. You may just give the rest of us something new we want to learn too! Need some inspiration? Look at our sister group, Geeks United In Crafts, the link for that is in the sidebar right here on the blog.<br />
So choose your own adventure and give yourself the best present ever, TIME.<br />
<br />
I know that a lot of you sweet Geeks are crafty folk, so I'm sharing here my Geek-A-Palooza guide for 2015. It is a brand new book by the adorable Joselyn Hughes, and it is AMAZING. This was just released November 3rd, but you can still request it at your local library, or get it from just about any book seller of your choice. I promise you will so dig it.<br />

<br />
Yes, I love me some glitter decor and some snappy music, but this time of year can be hard. It can be a strange mix of all the greatness of a year mixed with some of the parts we least look forward to. I thought instead of dwelling on all the stuff we feel we need to do, here is what we HAVE to do to survive all the facets of the trickiest time of the year. We must get furiously happy.<br />
<br />
And I know just the person for the job. The Bloggess herself, Jenny Lawson. Get ready to get happy. The Geek Girls Book Club book for November 2015 is:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LI2JDBCPIw8/Vh_udN0g3MI/AAAAAAAACYE/TIMXNg4KeD0/s1600/furiously-happy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LI2JDBCPIw8/Vh_udN0g3MI/AAAAAAAACYE/TIMXNg4KeD0/s400/furiously-happy.jpg" width="262" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
"Furiously Happy" by Jenny Lawson</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://thebloggess.com/furiously-happy/">The Bloggess website</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is truly a book for everyone of the human experience persuasion. The bonus is, if you or someone you love has anxiety, depression or chronic illness, this will speak right to you my dears.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Some highlights and a little explanation from The Bloggess herself:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<ul style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #111111; font-family: Calibri, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.994px; list-style: square; margin: 0px 0px 1.7em 2.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">The time I lost both my arms in a sleeping accident</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">The neighborhood swans that tried to eat me</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">The day Australia refused to let me get Chlamydia even though I was wearing a protective koala costume</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Advice on how to survive the zombie apocalypse, the airport, and the zombie apocalypse at the airport</li>
<li style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Completely inappropriate things I’ve blurted out to fill awkward silences at my psychiatrist’s office.</li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #111111; font-family: Calibri, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.994px; margin-bottom: 1.7em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
But in all of these odd stories – the darkly serious and the strangely baffling – I go back to a simple truth I learned from <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">The Breakfast Club</em>. “We’re all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it.” I agree completely. Except go back and scratch out the word “hiding”.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #111111; font-family: Calibri, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.994px; margin-bottom: 1.7em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Be bizarre. Be weird. Be proud of the uniquely beautiful way that you are broken.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #111111; font-family: Calibri, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.994px; margin-bottom: 1.7em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Be <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">furiously happy.</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is no secret that I adore Jenny and her blog, and her first book was so funny, my loud snort laughter scared the dog on more than one occasion. She is about working with what you've got, making the most of the crappier times in life and remembering to hold on to the good times to look back on when the going is rough. She is the giant metal chicken buying, taxidermy animal loving guru of finding the silver lining. You will love her. I dare you not to.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
She is also probably the reason I did this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_5EguLgH138/Vh_v4d80yXI/AAAAAAAACYQ/KZlb_6tR7eI/s1600/IMG_0544.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_5EguLgH138/Vh_v4d80yXI/AAAAAAAACYQ/KZlb_6tR7eI/s400/IMG_0544.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yes, Jenny is the inspiration behind my giant metal dinosaur I bought this summer. Met Daryl Dixon, Dinosaur Butler. He lives on my deck, and soon will be sporting a santa hat and antlers. I found him this summer, and the need for him was clear. I can't wait to give him a basket at easter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is what I want for all of us, happy or sad, hard times or living large... go find your metal dinosaur. Go find what makes you smile, what makes you remember how wonderful and damn valuable you are. Maybe that can be our present to ourselves this year. Remember you are entitled to some furiously happy times.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So go and read my dear Geeks, let no one stop you from your you-ness, because we all need exactly who you are. Desperately. We will start the read on November 1st and discuss the last Saturday of the month. I will see you there, I'll be the one with the giant metal dinosaur in a pilgrim hat.</div>

We autumn lovers can't get enough. The leaves, the ability to wear jeans without knee sweat, and our first big to do of the season: Halloween.<br />
<br />
I'm one of those people who love October. Scary movies are on all the time, from old creepers to new releases, and it is one of my favorite things to do. Watch a scary movie while cheerfully munching on bags of Halloween candy the trick or treaters will NEVER see because I'm a damn adult and I don't have to share my candy with you kids. GET OFF MY LAWN!<br />
<br />
Another favorite here at Geek Girls Book Club, is the announcement of the October read, in all its spooky, frightful glory.<br />
<br />
This year, I am going with the first book in one of my favorite book series ever. "Sandman Slim", by the incredible Richard Kadrey.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZO_7kBGNStc/Vfn35Izid_I/AAAAAAAACXc/QvoBUQPUu0k/s1600/sandman.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZO_7kBGNStc/Vfn35Izid_I/AAAAAAAACXc/QvoBUQPUu0k/s400/sandman.jpg" width="275" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://richardkadrey.com/books-2/sandman-slim/">Richard Kadrey's Sandman Slim page, check it out!</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This book, and the whole series, has it all... but I'll sum it up with a quote from Amazon.com: "<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Kadrey (</span><i style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Butcher Bird</i><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">) provides biting humor, an over-the-top antihero and a rich stew of metaphoric language in this testosterone- and adrenaline-charged noir thriller. James Stark spent 11 years killing monsters in Lucifer's arena for the entertainment of fallen angels, but now he's back in seedy, magic-riddled L.A., trying to avenge his girlfriend's murder and hunt down Mason Faim, the black magician responsible for getting him sent downtown. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">I can't even pretend to be impartial about this book because I love it so. The characters are so fun, the story is so wild, it is just what you want to curl up with to celebrate the coming of Halloween, a smart ass antihero and his compadres in arms, some who are angels, some...not so much.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Richard Kadrey can be found on twitter: @Richard_Kadrey, and please be sure to check out the website link under the book photo for more information, and also to see the rest of the titles in the series, because if this is your bag, you're gonna want 'em all. Trust me.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">So enjoy your fall, your candy and your pumpkin spice hangover. We'll discuss "Sandman Slim" the last Saturday of the month on Facebook, Twitter at #GGBC and on Goodreads, all the links are in the sidebar. I'll see you then, I'll be the one waiting with a bottle of aqua regia and some donuts.</span></span></div>

We're not weird...<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">It's almost FALL! WTF? Weren't we just dusting off the sand from our dollar store flip flops? Just eating our weight in ice cream from the local Dairy Queen? Just burning our fingers on 15 year old sparklers you found hidden in the garage?</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Well, our GGBC summer hiatus is over, and now we are on a mission. A mission to find all that is wonderful and weird on the internet, to...</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">...wait a minute, this just in from Geek icon Felicia Day:</span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">What better way to get into the swing of things again than with one of our very favorite Geek Girls. This is Felicia's first book, and it was just released. Like yesterday. It is new, so get on those library waiting lists, head to your favorite book seller and get ready for some much needed delightful weirdness:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; text-align: start;">"From online entertainment mogul, actress, and “queen of the geeks” Felicia Day comes a funny, quirky, and inspiring memoir about her unusual upbringing, her rise to Internet-stardom, and embracing her individuality to find success in Hollywood.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: x-small;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; text-align: start;" />

There’s also Felicia Day—violinist, filmmaker, Internet entrepreneur, compulsive gamer, hoagie specialist, and former lonely homeschooled girl who overcame her isolated childhood to become the ruler of a new world…or at least semi-influential in the world of Internet geeks and Goodreads book clubs.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: x-small;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; text-align: start;" />

But Felicia’s misadventures in Hollywood led her to produce her own web series, own her own production company, and become an Internet star.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: x-small;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; text-align: start;" />

Now, Felicia’s strange world is filled with thoughts on creativity, video games, and a dash of mild feminist activism—just like her memoir.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Now that we have our summer reading list and time to relax a bit, I thought it would be a great time to debut the new GGBC podcast: Alcohol & Authors:</span><br />

Hello! We’re Cara and Nicole, two geek-minded women with an affinity for reading, writing and spreading literary fun while having a drink or two. We love to learn about new indie projects: books, games, libraries… we review books on a selective basis. We actually judge books by covers.</div>

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NcMj4ED-0es/VVLvj0z4hdI/AAAAAAAACUM/tHGBREl9Fqw/s1600/iStock_000019987907XSmall-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NcMj4ED-0es/VVLvj0z4hdI/AAAAAAAACUM/tHGBREl9Fqw/s400/iStock_000019987907XSmall-2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
June! Summer! Time to somehow relax, unwind, and wish that we had more sun filled days of warmth.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Remember the relief when you had school behind you and three whole months to just be what you wanted to be? The one thing I loved from school was that I had a great teacher who would put together an amazing summer reading list. I have always been a big reader, and this was my time to indulge. I wanted hours to myself to sit and read undisturbed, punctuated by trips to the library for a refill.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So that's what I want for us this summer dear Geek readers, to have June, July and August to be our Summer reading months. I'll start a list of too good to pass up titles here, and I hope you'll add your own suggestions in the comments and on Goodreads, Facebook and Twitter at #GGBCSummer.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You can choose some new titles, go back to old favorites and just ENJOY. At your own pace. Because you deserve to read just for the joy of it, just for you. All I ask is that you let us know what your reading and loving during the summer, and leave it in the same places as your book suggestions. We will keep each other reading and keep in touch all at the same time!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Watch the blog for any fun posts and updates, and check in with how the Summer Reading List is growing!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So relax. Breathe. Remember you are amazing. Keep reading. Keep your face to the sun. And back to business in September.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'll see you soon dear Geeks, I'll be the one in the big floppy hat, sweet tea in hand, reading Neil Gaiman. Again. <3</div>

Can you believe it? Over 40 books, countless blog posts, meeting Geeks and new friends from all over the world. I can't believe we are all still reading together, making sweet mayhem and nerdy laughs together.<br />
<br />
I am so grateful for all of you amazing Geeks.<br />
<br />
Looking back, you see all the people you've met, and friends you've made. You also think of what is no more, and what has changed. I think remembering is often bittersweet. The sadness of what will not come is always gently held with the honor of being a part of what was.<br />
<br />
As we keep moving and keep reading and laughing and being here together, I thought the May 2015 read would be to remember an author who we all truly miss and although we are sad his words will come no more, we are blessed to have his words forever.<br />
<br />
We will celebrate with a title by the incomparable Sir Terry Pratchett, with his delightful book, "Dodger".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jimE-IDvjNw/VS7YUGHRmwI/AAAAAAAACTI/8ZmgMTOWNtw/s1600/Terry_Pratchett_Dodger_cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jimE-IDvjNw/VS7YUGHRmwI/AAAAAAAACTI/8ZmgMTOWNtw/s1600/Terry_Pratchett_Dodger_cover.jpg" height="400" width="260" /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
From the book description: </div>

<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; margin-bottom: 14px; padding: 0px;">
<i>Beloved and bestselling author Sir Terry Pratchett's Dodger, a Printz Honor Book, combines high comedy with deep wisdom in a tale of one remarkable boy's rise in a fantasy-infused Victorian London.</i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; margin-bottom: 14px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px;">
<i>Seventeen-year-old Dodger is content as a sewer scavenger. But he enters a new world when he rescues a young girl from a beating, and her fate impacts some of the most powerful people in England.</i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px;">
<i>From Dodger's encounter with the mad barber Sweeney Todd, to his meetings with the great writer Charles Dickens and the calculating politician Benjamin Disraeli, history and fantasy intertwine in a breathtaking account of adventure and mystery.</i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px;">

So join me on a journey with Sir Terry one more time, and look forward to all the adventures we have in store for us dear GGBC, may there be many years and many pages ahead of us.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px;">

We will discuss "Dodger" the last Saturday of May, here, on Twitter and on Facebook and Goodreads, links are on the side of the blog.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px;">
I will see you then sweet Geeks, I'll bring the shiny balloons and cake. You, as always, bring your amazing, one of a kind selves. You are all irreplaceable. Thank you for your time with us.</div>

<i>In a perfect world . . .</i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
<i>We'd get to hang out with Amy Poehler, watching dumb movies, listening to music, and swapping tales about our coworkers and difficult childhoods. Because in a perfect world, we'd all be friends with Amy—someone who seems so fun, is full of interesting stories, tells great jokes, and offers plenty of advice and wisdom (the useful kind, not the annoying kind you didn't ask for, anyway). Unfortunately, between her Golden Globe-winning role on Parks and Recreation, work as a producer and director, place as one of the most beloved SNL alumni and cofounder of the Upright Citizens' Brigade, involvement with the website Smart Girls at the Party, frequent turns as acting double for Meryl Streep, and her other gig as the mom of two young sons, she's not available for movie night.</i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
<i>Luckily we have the next best thing: Yes Please, Amy's hilarious and candid book. A collection of stories, thoughts, ideas, lists, and haikus from the mind of one of our most beloved entertainers, Yes Please offers Amy's thoughts on everything from her "too safe" childhood outside of Boston to her early days in New York City, her ideas about Hollywood and "the biz," the demon that looks back at all of us in the mirror, and her joy at being told she has a "face for wigs." Yes Please is chock-full of words and wisdom to live by.</i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333;">

<br />
I wanted to go in a different direction this month, to go so science fiction that it turned out to be science FACT. If you are as big of a space nerd as I am, you will not need an introduction to the author for March. He is a larger than life, making-science-cool icon. He is Neil deGrasse Tyson.<br />
<br />
We are going to have a tour of space and its secrets with one of the most brilliant minds on the subject. This is going to be a blast (ahem) so fasten your rocket seat belts for:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MNuaz52j5sA/VOKzEjEz5nI/AAAAAAAACRo/NtQeStaEkME/s1600/imgres.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MNuaz52j5sA/VOKzEjEz5nI/AAAAAAAACRo/NtQeStaEkME/s1600/imgres.jpg" height="400" width="265" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Death by Black Hole</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
By: Neil deGrasse Tyson</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I thought a summary would be appropriate for this one to explain the journey, so here is a great intro from Amazon and Goodreads:</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.8000001907349px; line-height: 19.3199996948242px;">Loyal readers of the monthly "Universe" essays in Natural History magazine have long recognized Neil deGrasse Tyson's talent for guiding them through the mysteries of the cosmos with clarity and enthusiasm. Bringing together more than forty of Tyson's favorite essays, Death by Black Hole explores a myriad of cosmic topics, from what it would be like to be inside a black hole to the movie industry's feeble efforts to get its night skies right. One of America's best-known astrophysicists, Tyson is a natural teacher who simplifies the complexities of astrophysics while sharing his infectious fascination for our universe.</span></blockquote>
I hope you are as excited as I am to expand your knowledge, have some fun, and share what you find with the science loving people in your own life. I think this one is going to be a game changer.<br />
<br />
Who's with me? If you want to embark on this voyage with us, we begin March 1st, and discussion is the last Saturday of the month here, on our Facebook group on Twitter at #GGBC and on Goodreads.<br />
I can't wait to see you, I'll be the one in the spacesuit with the Pigs In Space lunchbox.Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17936036370496372522noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3363355170303670971.post-58702216922459522782015-01-16T09:55:00.001-08:002015-01-16T09:55:30.427-08:00Our Hearts Are On The TriggerFebruary 2015 gives us more than just candy hearts and romantic platitudes.<br />
<br />
Valentine's Day will be a little more unpredictable this year with the Geek Girls Book Club's selection for this month.<br />
<br />
A little darker? A little more mysterious? A little unsettling? A little wonderful?<br />
<br />
Get ready for a lot more than chocolates and flowers this St. Valentine's, and pick up Trigger Warning:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-O_crfWUPJpA/VLlOr2gwhII/AAAAAAAACQs/n8l1kS8n1lg/s1600/TriggerWarningShortFictionsandDisturbances_Hardback_1418011403.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-O_crfWUPJpA/VLlOr2gwhII/AAAAAAAACQs/n8l1kS8n1lg/s1600/TriggerWarningShortFictionsandDisturbances_Hardback_1418011403.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.neilgaiman.com/works/Books/Trigger+Warning%3A+Short+Fictions+and+Disturbances/ed/383/">Neil Gaiman's Trigger Warning</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is Neil Gaiman's newest, and in fact, will be released February 3rd, 2015. If you are going to get this from your local library, I would advise putting this on reserve now. This is going to be snatched up by eager readers everywhere.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We have read many of Mr. Gaiman's works in the past, and he is definitely beloved here in the GGBC and all over the world. We cannot resist the siren song of a new Gaiman book, and what a perfect way to celebrate the month of hearts and cupids than with our very own literary man in black.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So join us all of February as we enjoy this dark delight together, and we will gather the last Saturday of the month to discuss on Twitter, Facebook and Goodreads. All the links are here on the blog.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will see you then, and may you find your heart in many stories this month.</div>

New Reads!And now we're talking about 2015. 2015. Are you kidding? Where do our geeky years go? As readers, we have had an incredible 2014 of new books and old favorites to enjoy here at GGBC, and I am really excited to start our soon to be FOURTH YEAR of Geek Girls Book Club.<br />
<br />
We can start our own library soon. With coffee, an open bar, and places to nap everywhere. Reading nirvana. We may need a big lottery win for that to happen, but while we wait for that, we ring in a new year, and also get to welcome a new book!<br />
<br />
You know we love our geeky authors, but when that author is also an incredibly talented and super Geek Girl herself, we just have to read!<br />
<br />
For our first book of 2015, I give you, Blake Northcott's "Arena Mode":<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="http://www.blakenorthcott.com/home/books/arena-mode/">Blake's webpage</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is the summary via Amazon, and I encourage you to read her webpage and see the story behind this, it is such a cool vision for a series, and has been regarded very highly since its release. And the awesome part? It's a series, so if you love it you can keep going!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #38761d;">"<span style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">In his twenty-nine years, Matthew Moxon had done virtually nothing with his record-breaking IQ and unparalleled problem solving abilities. <span style="font-family: inherit;">I think ushering in the new year with a new author to GGBC is the perfect way to start the year. I hope that you all join us in this read, spread the word about us to your friends and geeky family, and get ready for all kinds of new adventures ahead. We will start the book on January first, and discuss on Facebook, Twitter and Goodreads starting the last Saturday of the month. Can't wait to see you there.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">2015 will be full of amazing things. Let's find them together, sweet Geeks. </span></div>

Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17936036370496372522noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3363355170303670971.post-87031742908038417892014-11-17T09:29:00.003-08:002014-11-17T09:34:03.742-08:00We at the Geek Girls Book Club try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup.The Holidays. They are upon us kids, and whether you celebrate, imbibe or hide under the covers...it is that time of year again.<br />
<br />
This is our 3rd year of a GGBC Holiday tradition: NOT reading a group book.<br />
<br />
This time of year is already stressful enough without adding another "should do" to your list. Instead, we here at GGBC celebrate December in two ways.<br />
<br />
Firstly:<br />
Celebrate what YOU want to do. Are you a writer? WRITE. Are you a crafter? Craft the hell out of it, baby. Baker? Cookies for days.<br />
<br />
Celebrate by making space during the month to create something you enjoy. Then please share your project and/or a favorite book on the subject at #GGBC or on the Goodreads or Facebook group. It is so amazing to see all the different projects over the month, and to get ideas and inspiration from other Geeks.<br />
<br />
To get you started, here's a few of my favorite crafty inspirations:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HcedtO2GlOc/VGoq4ZYeQRI/AAAAAAAACP8/Yr_H5QWsxvM/s1600/star-wars-craft-book.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HcedtO2GlOc/VGoq4ZYeQRI/AAAAAAAACP8/Yr_H5QWsxvM/s1600/star-wars-craft-book.jpg" height="320" width="249" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Star Wars Craft Book by Bonnie Burton</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Star-Wars-Craft-Book/dp/0345511166">Amazon Link</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jPg-rqju47E/VGorvheORvI/AAAAAAAACQE/UdUoSvMjkek/s1600/images.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jPg-rqju47E/VGorvheORvI/AAAAAAAACQE/UdUoSvMjkek/s1600/images.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
World Of Geekcraft by Susan Beal</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/World-Geekcraft-Step-Step-Instructions/dp/0811874613">Amazon Link</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And don't forget our sister group on Facebook, those Geeks are posting cool, incredible stuff daily: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/158806777521290/">Geeks United In Crafts</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Secondly, we celebrate by giving books to people who need them:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This year, we are helping a small business in Wisconsin, USA to get their free geeky community library section of their store going. Take a minute and check out the great stuff going on at Uber Dork Cafe: <a href="http://www.uberdorkcafe.com/community.html">Uber Dork Community</a>, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/UberDorkCafe/info?tab=overview">Uber Dork Cafe Facebook page</a>, <a href="http://patch.com/wisconsin/menomoneefalls/uberdork-cafe-unique-cafe-gaming-center-and-classroom-coming-soon">Local Paper article on Uber Dork Cafe</a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Natali, the owner and one of the first members of GGBC is an incredible lady who just had a successful Kickstarter campaign to help her dream of this business become a reality. A big part of this Cafe is having it be a safe place for kids and community to come together. She has begun a small, free to use library that kids can use to get and read books. Read, return, repeat. So I thought it would be cool that if you had some favorite kids or Young Adult books you want to donate, to send them with Geeky love to Uber Dork. New or gently used is great, and Geeky is highly encouraged. No one makes any money on these books, they go directly to making the book selection the biggest and geekiest possible. The best way to ensure future readers, is to get them books often and early. Reading is a powerful magic in the world guys, let's help to spread that happy a bit.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

Inconceivable!Can you believe that it is almost time for Thanksgiving here is the US? Autumn is flying by and writing "Surrender Dorothy" in the sky while we get ready to hunker down for winter's imminent arrival. <br />
<br />
I think the best way to handle the shorter, colder days to come is with a good story. One of my favorite books and movies has always been "The Princess Bride". We all can practically recite the film word for word, and it is like comfort food on your screen. To me, it is the perfect story, and I know there are many who feel the same way.<br />
<br />
The only thing better than a good movie, is the stories behind the movie. What was it like to make? Did the actors get along? Hate each other? Become lifelong buds and form a fellowship? In my brain, the cast of The Princess Bride were all best friends and also all rode off into the sunset on white horses. You wish you knew the stories within our favorite tale? As you wish.<br />
<br />
I give you, dear Geeks, our November Geek Girls Book Club book:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-08J92mRuq5I/VD2f9UBxymI/AAAAAAAACOw/HsnKt0KJBvY/s1600/princess-bride.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-08J92mRuq5I/VD2f9UBxymI/AAAAAAAACOw/HsnKt0KJBvY/s1600/princess-bride.jpg" height="400" width="265" /></a></div>
<br />
Yes! A book by our favorite Dread Pirate and gentleman, Cary Elwes. Now this is a brand new release. Brand new, as in releasing today. Get on those library waiting lists, get to your bookstore, share a copy with a friend and find the audiobook. OH MY GOSH IS THAT A THING? Cary Elwes telling me a story seems like the best plan ever. I shall scale the Cliffs Of Insanity to find such a thing.<br />
<br />
If you want to join in on this reading adventure, we set off November the first, and we'll gather to share tales of our journeys on the last Saturday of the month. So I will meet you in the fire swamp on that day. Anybody want a peanut?Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17936036370496372522noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3363355170303670971.post-86303649336049933202014-09-15T19:00:00.002-07:002014-09-15T19:02:01.182-07:00He's just a Poe boy, from a Poe family...<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

It's nearly here sweet Geeks...October. A favorite among us here at the Geeks Girls Book Club because we get to be a little darker, and also marks the return of Neil Gaiman's fabulous All Hallow's Read, which GGBC has participated in every year, and this will be no different! New to All Hallow's Read? Let Mr. Gaiman explain:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So October is so easy to enjoy it's scary. Just read some Edgar Allen Poe. Whatever you want, or if you're like me, nearly all of it. Let us know what stories and poems you're reading, and what you think. We will be posting about Mr. Poe starting the last Saturday of the month, at #GGBC on twitter, also in our Goodreads group and in our Facebook group. Links are on the side of this very blog! </div>

As a bonus, let us know through the month if you are celebrating All Hallow's read. Tell us what you're doing to kick up some graveyard fun and dig up some books to give to the readers in your life. I think a haunted themed trip to the library is in order, don't you? Extra skeleton keys to those who post pictures of their festivities. </div>

So whether you're tricking or treating, I hope you join us this month to read, enjoy a classic author with terrifying tales, and give the people in your life the best kind of scare... Having too many books to read! I'll see you this October Geeky ghouls, I'll be the lady with the raven. </div>
