She is stronger than we can possibly imagine...

Strange this was going to be January's book, where I unapologetically choose what I want to read for my birthday month. It's always been a little joke that I get to be the princess one month a year.

Then we lost more than a real Princess, we lost a friend, a confidant and a spirit guide. She was our first role model, first crush, first woman that I ever heard speak loud and proud about mental illness. She was a General, a partner, a mother, a writer, actress and a treasure. I loved you Carrie Fisher. I always will. You wore so many hats on that incredible brain...we can never hope to find your equal.

This is what I wanted to read, and now more than ever, I think we could use these stories.

So here, in some small way, is our celebration and remembrance of an exceptional lady. The January GGBC book:

5th Annual GGBC Craft-A-Palooza!

December! Insanity! Gifts! Alcohol!

We are all so busy the next few weeks that it is a time of year that we traditionally here at GGBC take a break from reading and get crafty. This isn't just regular crafts, this can include baking, metal and wood working, making a popcorn popper out of soda cans or getting that scarf knit you always wanted to finish. Paint a picture, write a haiku, make a baking soda and vinegar volcano complete with dinosaurs or get that damn Lego set put together. It's all about giving yourself permission to take time for yourself and do something YOU want to do. Remember you? Yeah, you is pretty damn amazing, and they need some looking after. SO GO FORTH AND CREATE!

Time to be grateful for female strength and wit...

It's the season of turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie and stress. Why do we let these supposed happiest times of the year become our most dreaded human interactions? Whether you look forward to the holidays with joyous abandon or a bottle of scotch and dread in your heart, we could all use some things and those things would be gratitude and humor. Those two things will get you through a hell of a lot kids, a HELL of a lot.

If we can see the humor in even the roughest times, if we can remember to be grateful for even the smallest of graces, than you are ahead of the game my dears, you are ahead by MILES. So I thought I'd share with you a new book I read and fell in love with, by a woman I admire and love the work of so deeply, I can only hope you find the joy in her words the way I have. She is a goddamn gift, and she embodies the gratitude and humor thing like nobody's business. You're going to love her. GGBC, I present our November book for 2016:

Halloween Read 2016!

It's here! The favorite time of year for all thriller/horror fans. We can't wait to get our fill of movie marathons, and we are always on the lookout for the creepy movie or story we haven't heard, or to go back and read our favorite terror tale.

At GGBC, we always try and pick something that is creepy and a really exciting read, and this year this one was requested many times, so we are finally reading it.

Welcome to October, and our book for Halloween, The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

Falling for Books...

We're BACK!

I hope you had an amazing summer and you ate amazing foods and went amazing places and saw amazing sights. And I hope if all of those things were in your own backyard you had a summer like me and THAT IS AWESOME.

Now that our vacation/staycations are over, it is time to get down to the business we all want to get to. Reading some damn books.

I wanted something light, something fun, and something that will make you remember women can be the biggest badasses on the planet, and even badasses in the kitchen. We are powerful when we find our gifts baby, we are unstoppable then.

September 1st begins our read of our dream best friend and culinary angel, Julia Child. You can't learn about her and her life and not fall smitten and in awe of her tenacity. She was one powerful geek girl, and we are celebrating her as our first book back.

Ladies and Gentlegeeks, I give you, "My Life In France" by Julia Child.

This is an older release and you will have no trouble getting this one from the local library or even picking up a used copy very inexpensively. I suggest you do buy a copy, because once you read it, you'll want to keep it.

I am so glad we're back, getting ready to go on an adventure with our gal pal Julia, and remember that we all have a power within us that makes us grand, and unique in all the world.

#Living Your Best Life?

You hear a lot about "living your best life ".  You see it on Instagram , on Pinterest and most annoyingly, as a hashtag. Most of the time you see this accompanied by photos of dream locations, perfectly decorated rooms and gorgeous meals in fancy restaurants. The perfect pair of jeans or 700 dollar boots.

This got me thinking. What about the rest of us? Are we not living our best lives because we aren't seeing the Grecian sunset or the perfectly plated meal? What if we are eating our frozen dinner in front of YouTube videos in our sweatpants?

Living your best life is not a Pinterest board. Maybe living YOUR best life is feeling good enough to take a shower today as the weight of depression lessens. Your best life is playing with your pets or your kids because today was a really good day in your chronic illness. You got to the store even though you were really anxious about it. You started those new meds. You did a chemo treatment, again. You dealt with that asshole at work without letting them rattle you. You went to the gym. Made a commitment. Walked away from a bad situation. Made the phone call. Started writing. Had time to read. Volunteered at the shelter. Said yes. Said no.

Living your best life is more than a hashtag, more than a material thing. It is you. It is doing something with courage or conviction or joy.  It is doing the very best you can the best way you know how. It is surviving another day. It is helping others. In every way big and small that you open your life up with brave steps or a loving act, you are living your best life. So don't compare someone's trip to the coast with your anxious trip to the store or trip to the shower. They all are beautiful. They all have the power to change your life, to make you stronger. Never forget you are constantly braving new adventures, whatever they may be, and I am so proud of you for forging ahead. Never stop going. Your best life is right now, hashtag or no. 

It's Hot for An Anniversary in May...

Five years. FIVE YEARS GUYS.

Geek Girls Book Club is off to kindergarten and I can hardly believe it. Our baby is growing up.

I cannot tell you how teary eyed, weepy proud it makes me that we are all still here, with new friends and old, celebrating dozens and dozens of books and shenanigans...still crazy after all these years, as Paul Simon would say:

It has been a wonderful, winding journey and it has changed my life and many of yours in little and miraculous ways. Like a little online scrapbook for us all to remember fondly as the baby photos fade. I love you guys, thank you for being you.

It also is ushering in our Summer Break! No scheduled books June, July or August, but there are so many amazing books coming out this summer, and so many great ones to catch up on from the GGBC book list, you won't be wordless for a minute!

But we do have a book for May that has me jumping up and damn down with excitement. You know my big three: Neil Gaiman, Richard Kadrey and Joe Hill. They are my trifecta of wonderful. And guess what? All 3 have new stuff coming out very soon. So for our 5th anniversary, we are reading Joe Hill's "The Fireman". In stores May 17th.

April showers are soon to be upon us, and I think this is the perfect time to read a book that is best known for the movie version of the story. It's quirky, touching, and surprisingly thought provoking. And what it has to say is just what we need to hear in the world right now. Love is everything. Find happiness. Let your freak flag fly my darlings.

You will find you see a little of yourself in these characters, and maybe wishing you were a little more like them. This is a title that is easy to get a hold of at your local library or bookstore, and even for your e-reader. This story is going to be some spring cleaning for our winter weary minds, and I hope you love it.

Happy Women's Day

These women...

I have a friend, who lost her husband after helping him through the ravages of a stroke. She remained loving and positive, even through her pain. Spreading her heart to others. She is Love personified.

I have a friend, who is an artist. She has fought past physical hardship and uncertainty to find her truth, to stand fully in who she is, to create with vision. She is Joyfulness herself.

I have a friend who is an actress. She took a leap of faith to entertain, to bring joy, to be what she is meant to be. She brings fearlessness with her in whatever she does. She is Confidence.

I have friends who are sisters. They not only care for all their family and friends without hesitation, but they live their dream of running a farm. All with working full time jobs and helping their dad through illness. Even in his loss, they are beacons of positive energy and who I want to be. They are Hope.

I have a friend who is a single mother. She raises 2 amazing girls and never wastes time on the negative. She fought through much so she could come out the other side making the world better for her girls and her community. She is Strength.

I have, unfortunately, friends who have fought, and are fighting cancer. Their grace and beauty remained untouched by disease. They used their journey to expand their hearts, and the hearts of those around them. They are Warriors.

I have a sister, who never lets her dreams slip away. She is constantly creating in words, in art, in her own way, a life that is unique and her own. She never lets fear stop her, she keeps her life turned toward the light. She is Inspiration.

I have a daughter, who at a young age has achieved more than many ever will. It's not just her amazing grades and achievements as a child, but as an adult, she has made a life to be proud of. She has a job she loves and friends who support her. She never, ever gives up. She makes things happen. She is Determination.

I have a mother, diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in her early 30's. It has physically crippled nearly every joint, causing daily, unforgiving pain. After more than 20 surgeries, she still walks on her own two feet. Has volunteered to make her community better, has raised 2 children and been married joyfully for almost 46 years. My first teacher of grace, of always helping others, and never letting the negative take the brilliant shine off the positive. She is Grace incarnate.

I am blessed, for all these women, and many more I could name. Thank you for giving me your lessons. Thank you for giving me your love. Thank you for making my heart better for knowing you.

Love Is...

It's soon to be February. The month of Valentine, the month of love. But as great as romantic love is, there is nothing as wonderful as the love we have of our friends. Our chosen family, the people who choose us again and again, knowing our best and worst traits.

It seems a sign that the perfect book to celebrate friendship and the love we have for them will be released February 16, 2016. I give you Our new GGBC read:

New Year NEW READS!

A new year, letting some old baggage go, wrapping and holding on to the good moments like precious heirlooms. It is time to forge ahead. Time to pick a new path of adventure to start the new year off right.

4th Annual GGBC Craft-A Palooza!

Every December, we have a tradition here at The Geek Girls Book Club, and that is that December is about YOU.

Whether you celebrate the holidays or not, this time of year is jammed with stressors. Lines, weather, impatient people wherever you go...it can put a huge cloud over the whole time of year.

So instead of having another thing to do, even as fun as reading a book, I want you to do something YOU WANT TO DO. Only catch? I want you to share what you did with us on one of our social media groups, or even here in the comments.

You want to learn to play the ukulele? Tell us what you did to make it happen. Learn poker? Dog training? The history of swords? Knitting? Painting? Photography? WHATEVER. Go and learn something awesome, make something crafty, and share what it is and what resources you used to do it. You may just give the rest of us something new we want to learn too! November: A time to be Thankfully Furious

And now ladies and gentlegeeks, the holidays doth approach.

Yes, I love me some glitter decor and some snappy music, but this time of year can be hard. It can be a strange mix of all the greatness of a year mixed with some of the parts we least look forward to. I thought instead of dwelling on all the stuff we feel we need to do, here is what we HAVE to do to survive all the facets of the trickiest time of the year. We must get furiously happy.

And I know just the person for the job. The Bloggess herself, Jenny Lawson. Get ready to get happy. The Geek Girls Book Club book for November 2015 is:

This is truly a book for everyone of the human experience persuasion. The bonus is, if you or someone you love has anxiety, depression or chronic illness, this will speak right to you my dears.

Some highlights and a little explanation from The Bloggess herself:

• The time I lost both my arms in a sleeping accident
• The neighborhood swans that tried to eat me
• The day Australia refused to let me get Chlamydia even though I was wearing a protective koala costume
• Advice on how to survive the zombie apocalypse, the airport, and the zombie apocalypse at the airport
• Completely inappropriate things I’ve blurted out to fill awkward silences at my psychiatrist’s office.

But in all of these odd stories – the darkly serious and the strangely baffling – I go back to a simple truth I learned from The Breakfast Club. “We’re all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it.” I agree completely. Except go back and scratch out the word “hiding”.

Be bizarre. Be weird. Be proud of the uniquely beautiful way that you are broken.

Be furiously happy.

It is no secret that I adore Jenny and her blog, and her first book was so funny, my loud snort laughter scared the dog on more than one occasion. She is about working with what you've got, making the most of the crappier times in life and remembering to hold on to the good times to look back on when the going is rough. She is the giant metal chicken buying, taxidermy animal loving guru of finding the silver lining. You will love her. I dare you not to.

 She is also probably the reason I did this:

Yes, Jenny is the inspiration behind my giant metal dinosaur I bought this summer. Met Daryl Dixon, Dinosaur Butler. He lives on my deck, and soon will be sporting a santa hat and antlers. I found him this summer, and the need for him was clear. I can't wait to give him a basket at easter.

This is what I want for all of us, happy or sad, hard times or living large... go find your metal dinosaur. Go find what makes you smile, what makes you remember how wonderful and damn valuable you are. Maybe that can be our present to ourselves this year. Remember you are entitled to some furiously happy times.

October is going to Hell.

This time of year is known for its unabashedly hedonistic amounts of candy, costumes and pumpkin spice toilet paper. We autumn lovers can't get enough. The leaves, the ability to wear jeans without knee sweat, and our first big to do of the season: Halloween.

I'm one of those people who love October. Scary movies are on all the time, from old creepers to new releases, and it is one of my favorite things to do. Watch a scary movie while cheerfully munching on bags of Halloween candy the trick or treaters will NEVER see because I'm a damn adult and I don't have to share my candy with you kids. GET OFF MY LAWN!

Another favorite here at Geek Girls Book Club, is the announcement of the October read, in all its spooky, frightful glory.

This year, I am going with the first book in one of my favorite book series ever. "Sandman Slim", by the incredible Richard Kadrey.

I can't even pretend to be impartial about this book because I love it so. The characters are so fun, the story is so wild, it is just what you want to curl up with to celebrate the coming of Halloween, a smart ass antihero and his compadres in arms, some who are angels, some...not so much.

We're BACK Geeky Readers! We're not weird...

It's almost FALL! WTF? Weren't we just dusting off the sand from our dollar store flip flops? Just eating our weight in ice cream from the local Dairy Queen? Just burning our fingers on 15 year old sparklers you found hidden in the garage?

A GGBC Podcast!

Now that we have our summer reading list and time to relax a bit, I thought it would be a great time to debut the new GGBC podcast: Alcohol & Authors:

Hello! We’re Cara and Nicole, two geek-minded women with an affinity for reading, writing and spreading literary fun while having a drink or two. We love to learn about new indie projects: books, games, libraries… we review books on a selective basis. We actually judge books by covers.

C. Elizabeth Vescio (or just Cara) is the author of the Wasted Series and Adventures of the Dress. She published her first book, Elegantly Wasted in 2012 and is currently on her 4th book. Cara is a photographer, gamer, cosplayer and animal enthusiast. She lives in Las Vegas with her husband and four mutts. She’s passionate about Shakespeare, Paul Simon and Loki as portrayed by Tom Hiddleson.

Motto: Sarcasm is life.

Nicole Girtman is the founder of the Geek Girls Book Club, avid knitter and mother of alpacas. She also founded Geeks United In Crafts, is a gamer, amateur photographer, collector of old cookbooks and loather of raisins in cereal. She lives in Minnesota where it’s cold in the winter, hot in the summer and accents are a way of life.

Summer Reading List

June! Summer! Time to somehow relax, unwind, and wish that we had more sun filled days of warmth.

Remember the relief when you had school behind you and three whole months to just be what you wanted to be? The one thing I loved from school was that I had a great teacher who would put together an amazing summer reading list. I have always been a big reader, and this was my time to indulge. I wanted hours to myself to sit and read undisturbed, punctuated by trips to the library for a refill.

So that's what I want for us this summer dear Geek readers, to have June, July and August to be our Summer reading months. I'll start a list of too good to pass up titles here, and I hope you'll add your own suggestions in the comments and on Goodreads, Facebook and Twitter at #GGBCSummer.

You can choose some new titles, go back to old favorites and just ENJOY. At your own pace. Because you deserve to read just for the joy of it, just for you. All I ask is that you let us know what your reading and loving during the summer, and leave it in the same places as your book suggestions. We will keep each other reading and keep in touch all at the same time!

Four years. Can you believe it? Over 40 books, countless blog posts, meeting Geeks and new friends from all over the world. I can't believe we are all still reading together, making sweet mayhem and nerdy laughs together.

I am so grateful for all of you amazing Geeks.

Looking back, you see all the people you've met, and friends you've made. You also think of what is no more, and what has changed. I think remembering is often bittersweet. The sadness of what will not come is always gently held with the honor of being a part of what was.

As we keep moving and keep reading and laughing and being here together, I thought the May 2015 read would be to remember an author who we all truly miss and although we are sad his words will come no more, we are blessed to have his words forever.

We will celebrate with a title by the incomparable Sir Terry Pratchett, with his delightful book, "Dodger".

I could go on and on about this awesome woman and her book, but I think the back of 

the book says it better than I ever could. Start your warmer weather reading with this, and

We'd get to hang out with Amy Poehler, watching dumb movies, listening to music, and swapping tales about our coworkers and difficult childhoods. Because in a perfect world, we'd all be friends with Amy—someone who seems so fun, is full of interesting stories, tells great jokes, and offers plenty of advice and wisdom (the useful kind, not the annoying kind you didn't ask for, anyway). Unfortunately, between her Golden Globe-winning role on Parks and Recreation, work as a producer and director, place as one of the most beloved SNL alumni and cofounder of the Upright Citizens' Brigade, involvement with the website Smart Girls at the Party, frequent turns as acting double for Meryl Streep, and her other gig as the mom of two young sons, she's not available for movie night.

Luckily we have the next best thing: Yes Please, Amy's hilarious and candid book. It's time to space out...

I hope that you have all been enjoying the GGBC selections so far in 2015, the response has been so incredible and I am so happy to see our geeky little gathering growing and getting more and more exciting to choose books for.

I wanted to go in a different direction this month, to go so science fiction that it turned out to be science FACT. If you are as big of a space nerd as I am, you will not need an introduction to the author for March. He is a larger than life, making-science-cool icon. He is Neil deGrasse Tyson.

We are going to have a tour of space and its secrets with one of the most brilliant minds on the subject. This is going to be a blast (ahem) so fasten your rocket seat belts for:
