Wanted: Geeks
So we have has a blast with the Geek A Palooza in December, and are ready to fire up the engines of Ready Player One in January. One more thing we need in 2012... we need MORE GEEKS!
The mission of The Geek Girls Book Club is to be a place where anyone can read the books that are generally passed over by the mainstream book club. We have read so many amazing books in just 8 months. (Click the link on the side for the Goodreads group page and you can see all the titles.) My wish for 2012 is to really spread the word about the GGBC and be able to reach more people who would like to be in the company of such excellent geeks as yourselves.
So your mission, if you choose to accept it: SPREAD THE NERD WORD. That's it. Tell your friends, teachers, librarians, barbers, and whoever else would enjoy this group. Maybe we can make the world a bit brighter by making a safe place for all ages and creeds of geek to gather and talk about the things that really interest them. Maybe we can get people to like reading and maybe even themselves a bit in the process. You can print out a flyer and leave it at your local comic or book store or coffee shop (With their permission of course.) Word of mouth and posting on your blogs, Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr would be fantastic as well! Going to a Con? Feel free to spread the word there too. I'd love to see a GGBC tshirt in the crowd!
Thank you to all of you who are so passionate and just plain amazing about this group. I never dreamed that we would have over 600 members in several countries by now. It is all because of the drive you all have to make this happen, and I can never thank you enough. You all rock my geeky socks. Let's make 2012 The Year Of The Geek.

New Year New Fiction!
It seems impossible, but soon 2012 will be upon us. A year filled with new beginnings, and for us, new fiction. I thought it might be fun to start out the year with a new book. A book that really speaks to geeks and that many are really wanting to read (or listen to the audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton). So here it is, our first book of 2012: Ready Player One
The read begins on January 1st and we'l dive into this bad boy on January 28th. May the New Year and your new fiction be filled with Geeky joy!

Geek A Palooza Starts Today!
1. Be sure to read all about December's craziness a few posts down. December Geek A Palooza
2. Grab yourself a copy of The Star Wars Craft Book.
3. Share your projects with us on Twitter, Goodreads, Facebook
4. Share a favorite children's book with a child you love and donate a copy to charity if you can.
5. Post what book you shared and why you love it, and what charity it went to if you donated a copy.
Lather, rinse, repeat for all of December. Let's see how much book geek love we can share and how many Star Wars crafts can be made and have a great time doing it.
Happy Holidays to you most excellent Geeks, you all warm my Grinchy heart.

December Geek A Palooza!
'Tis the season to be stressed out, grumpy and overwhelmed! Hooray?
You just need to buy/borrow/adore a copy and pick out one or every craft in the book. Then post those photos to Twitter (@NikkiSticks #GGBC) Facebook or Google +. We are going to have an internet geek crafting blowout. You can keep the crafts for yourself, use them as gifts, or organize a crafting party with your IRL friends and/or kids. Not crafty? See the next phase:
~ Do you remember your favorite children's/preteen/teen story? One that really meant something to you? Helped you to love reading and gave you a real adventure? I want you to find that story and re read it. Then I want you to share that story. That could mean reading it to a fledgling geek you love, sharing it with a friend or donating a copy to your local library or a charity like Toys For Tots. What we are after is sharing ourselves and the power of reading. There are almost 500 total GGBC members, and that much power used for good can really change the world, and us, for the better. Let's show 'em what we got geeks!
Post the book you reread and shared and we will have a drawing for some fun prizes and everyone who participates is entered!
Of course, you can do both these things. (I am!) I hope you do. Invite all the crafty, reading fun geeks you know to join us. Let's change a season of stress into a season of awesome geekiness and amazeball amounts of fun. You with me? Start your nerdy engines and post whenever you want all through December.
We are going to turn all that around my dear nerds. This December, we at the Geek Girls Book Club are going to have ourselves a party. I don't care what your religious affiliation is, or if you have none at all. This time of year gets to the most stoic geek, and we all need to have some well deserved fun.
So, here's the plan:
~The book for December is the amazing Bonnie Burton's Star Wars Craft Book!If you are so inclined, you can pick this up about everywhere, but I love to buy from local bookstores and Think Geek when I can.

So it is time to think about November my dear Geeks, and that got me thinking. There are so many Geeky movies that we love and watch during the colder months, and many of those movies are based on books. What is your favorite geeky movie that was based on a book? Let's put together some ideas, and we will vote soon.

Next Month's Graphic Novel Is...
Neil Gaiman's "Sandman"
If you cannot get a hold of a copy, or wish to read something else, that's fine. It is about the genre and finding something you enjoy. The read starts September 1st.

A Life In Pictures...
Looks like Sandman is in the lead for next month's graphic novel read... don't forget to vote! Also, I'm suggesting that if the winning title is not your cup of tea, or if you can't get a hold of it; read a graphic novel/comic that appeals to you. This is about enjoying the genre more than anything else. It should be a lot of fun!

A few details about Geek Girls Book Club
Just wanted to post a quick note about GGBC and how it works:
The books chosen every month are either by voting, popular request or chosen to fit a theme. You can suggest a favorite book anytime for future reading!
If you cannot get a book or are not interested in reading the month's selection, that is totally fine. There are no participation requirements.
If you want to read along but not take part in the discussions that is also fine. Please feel free to read and enjoy other members' comments.
I will try and give enough time for everyone to get the book well in advance. Remember, you can take the whole month to read the book, and you don't have to be "caught up" with the group. This is for enjoying great books, not deadlines. I want people to like bookclub!
Please feel free to pass along GGBC info to your friends. The main website iswww.geekgirlsbookclub.blogspot.com all information and links are there. Also, I am at @NikkiSticks if anyone has any questions.
The only rules are:
1. Be repectful of the other members' opinions.
2. No Spamming
3. Enjoy your reading as you do best!
Thank you to all the amazing GGBC members!
~Nikki
